"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" - Nelson Mandela

Hi, my name is Robert Geaves and I'm the Global Education Officer responsible for Outdoor Learning at Cumbria Development Education Centre (CDEC) - I thought it would be nice to share a few snippets of myself with you...

please read on

I am fortunate enough to be able to fill both my leisure and professional time taking part in and sharing my passion for activities in the great outdoors.

I am an experienced sub-aqua diver and enjoy all kinds of water sports both in and on the water.  On land, I love to go trekking, walking and climbing.

With a degree in environment management, and a love for nature, I like nothing more than breaking my journeys to investigate wildlife and wildlife habitats. I am never more at home than being in woodland, and I have for several years been engaged in running Forest Schools.  This has developed to include a programme of activities in conservation management and coppice crafts.

Prior to joining CDEC, the last 15 years my professional life has been divided between work involved with outdoor education and engagement in community development projects.

As well as delivering environmental education with both the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and the Wildlife Trusts in the UK, my work has also taken me to Asia to work on a barge converted into a floating environmental education / outdoor activity centre, and to Sub-Saharan Africa to live and work with local communities on aid and development projects.

I decided to become an outdoor educator so that I could inspire others to share a sense of wonder for the world we live in; and, hopefully, to engage people of all ages in learning to enjoy, love, respect and protect the world around us.

I have found, however, that if we are to make a change to the world that we a part of, and make a commitment to sustainable development, then we must develop and facilitate a system of values-based learning with a global dimension.

I look forward to sharing ideas and working with you to develop activities that will develop a sense of wonder for the world around us and at the same time help to educate for a fair and sustainable world.
