RSPB Fairburn Ings

Main Contact: James Dean
Description of work:

The RSPB’s Living Classrooms field teaching scheme at RSPB Fairburn Ings offers exciting, practical outdoor education programmes to schools.  Students explore nature through first-hand study of birds, habitats, food chains, adaptations, plants, invertebrates and other wildlife. Activities are risk-assessed and are linked to the National Curriculum for science and geography.

Whats Special ?: RSPB Fairburn Ings is an oasis for wildlife in the heart of West Yorkshire’s Aire Valley – an area of diverse habitat including: wetland, woodland, and grassland teeming with ducks, geese and swans, butterflies, dragonflies and other insects and wonderful wild flowers!  The reserve – which includes SSSI land - is partly reclaimed from what was an industrial site linked to the coal-mining industry. Fairburn’s experienced field teachers can help students of all ages to explore the natural and industrial heritage of the reserve.
