Page 8 of 8 After a walk down to the Luckens tree, we reviewed everything we had
done over the day and told a story together as a second community builder, to
prepare for dialogue. The children's thinking in forming questions was good,
but some found it quite hard to form philosophical, rather than factual
questioning, so the four adults did some ‘coaching', but without actually
suggesting any questions. The use of objects in relation to the questions was
abandoned due to lack of suitable objects and shortness of time, due to earlier
replanning/shifting of activities. Voting was one person one vote, and the
children voted by running to the Luckens tree.
- What happens when you die, do you still have thoughts and feelings? (the chosen question)
- Why are the town and countryside different?
- How many trees fall down in the whole world?
- Do animals have senses like we do?
- Is it important to know how many animals and trees there are in the world?
While the children seemed to find it difficult to think from the perspective of another living thing, in the dialogue that followed the children were fully engaged, very thoughtful and responded to one another's viewpoints, rather than just stating their own, so it is possible that the point of view exercise helped them to think beyond themselves.
It was not practical to have the children write down first or last thoughts. Instead, at the end of the dialogue, we asked them if they had changed their mind during the conversation (several had) and then asked them to return to the viewpoint of their chosen living thing and share one word.
The final activity, creating natural sculptures on the river bank, was very successful. Some children worked on their own, some in groups, but all made very creative use of the natural materials available and most connected their sculpture in some way to the enquiry or to some other aspect of the day's activities.
