Activity Days at Low Luckens Farm, September 2006
Where and
what is the Centre?
The Organic Resource Centre is housed in
a traditional farm building at Low Luckens farm, which opened its doors to the
public in November 2000.
The Centre aims to offer the
general public and special interest groups, the opportunity to understand and
experience sustainability in farming,
food, wildlife conservation and waste management.
The Centre is equipped with
information, displays and residential facilities.
Day or residential
visitors can use the Centre as a base to both enjoy and learn from the farm's
220 acres of organically managed farmland, ancient woodland and river habitats.
What are the aims
of Low Luckens Organic Resource Centre?
·
To
promote sustainability across farming, food, countryside conservation, waste,
energy and water use
·
To
encourage people of all ages and abilities to visit Whiteholme and Low Luckens
Farm and Resource Centre, as a place where they can enjoy closer contact with
nature, farm animals and their own creativity
·
To
promote Whiteholme and Low Luckens Farm as a source of healthy organic produce
·
To
share with other farms our unfolding experience in the relationships between
farming, food and people
In practice we run a programme
of educational visits to the farm for children of all ages, from nursery to
secondary; for groups of children or adults with special needs or social
disadvantage; and for any interested group of adults. We also have an
annual programme of events/workshops. And we maintain the Centre (open
seven days) as a place which any individual or family can use for information,
shelter, a cup of tea, when they visit the farm informally. The Centre
can also be used as a venue for meetings. In addition we have simple
self-catering accommodation for holidays on the farm or for people who want to
come and help with conservation or farm work.
An Opportunity to be involved
An organic farm is a busy place
at all times of the year, the tasks changing with the season. The Centre
offers the chance for individuals and
groups to experience farm and conservation work first hand.
